American Airlines has eliminated virtually all fees when you cancel a flight or change a flight. The extra flexibility when you change or cancel a flight means that you should be able to book without worrying about losing money or your miles. Since you can’t book a basic-economy fare with miles, there’s no need to worry about this more restrictive fare type. If you’re eligible for a refund on your plane ticket, airlines, travel agencies and OTAs have a duty to process your refund in a timely manner.

But in most cases, if you want to cancel your flight with no charges from the airline, you have to purchase a free cancellation flight. There are circumstances when you may be able to obtain some manner of refund for a non-refundable ticket. As mentioned above, airlines are required by law to provide full refunds to all buyers, regardless of ticket type, who cancel within 24 hours of booking tickets that they purchased at least seven days in advance. In many instances, it is better to purchase travel insurance instead of refundable airline tickets, as these tickets can cost 4x as much as non-refundable tickets. The same policy applies when using JetBlue TrueBlue points to book a flight, and since it doesn’t offer Blue Basic fares for points reservations, all fares are fully refundable. The taxes and fees paid are returned as a travel credit (almost instantly) but cannot be used in combination with reservations booked with points — leaving you with credits to use for a future reservation.

It’s important to note that credit card travel portals like Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards and Citi Thank You all count as third-party agencies in the eyes of the hotel. Basically, if you didn’t purchase your room in person or through a hotel representative or website, you aren’t that hotel’s direct customer. Add Cancellation Protection to your booking and get a refund if you can’t use your flight due to an emergency circumstance.

Except for basic economy and some tickets that originate outside of North and South America, you won’t have to worry about jumping through hoops or losing the value of your tickets. If you believe you are eligible for a refund, the first step is to contact the airline directly. Most airlines have customer service departments or dedicated refund request forms on their websites.

Many airlines have a dedicated customer service number for cancellations and refunds. It’s also worth noting that due to the current global pandemic and the uncertainty of travel, many airlines have temporarily relaxed their cancellation and refund policies to provide more flexibility to passengers. There are also tales of a little-known policy that may allow for a price adjustment within 30 days of purchase, sometimes with a $50 fee attached. So, it doesn’t hurt to ask United if the above method doesn’t work for you and you’ve booked your flight within the last month.
